     GUIDANCE NEWS

Starting in February, the Counseling Department at Elm Street Middle School will begin meeting with students on the topic of “Mediation”.  Mediation is a process through which students learn how to solve conflict peacefully before it escalates. The process promotes productive conversation between 2 students who self -refer.  This process is helpful throughout life.  Human nature dictates disagreements, and learning what to do with them is a very important skill.Students are able to fill out a Mediation Request in the Counseling Office or may be referred by their teacher. We use I- messages and Sentence Starters to convey feelings to each other. In the end, students sign an agreement, and clear the air in situations that may make them uncomfortable.  This is one tool to create a community that is respectful and peaceful.Respectfully,Your Elm St. Counseling Team
