So You Want to Mummify a Chicken?

Link:  Chicken Mummification Directions

As a culminating activity for our study of ancient Egypt, we decided to learn about the process of mummification using a chicken!  Take a look at our chicken mummification lab!

Chicken Mummification Process:

Day One: We took the weight of the chicken and then we measured the width and length.  We then rubbed the chicken with baking soda and salt.  We filled the body cavity with a salt, baking soda and powdered bleach mixture (natron). We put the chicken in a bag and covered it completely with natron.  We will check it in three days.

Day Four: Empty bags, empty chicken. They have really started to dehydrate! Re-pack with salt, baking soda and powdered bleach. Not too much of a stink....we did it outside....but DON'T keep the organs "preserved" in jars...they REEEEEK!

Day Nine: Chicken Snow Angels...not!

We re-packed our chickens in new natron mixture.

Day 19: Repack Again....21 containers of salt, 7 baking sodas, one powdered bleach and 7 big baggies.  He's lookin' pretty good!  Ok, maybe he stinks a little bit...
