HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SUCCESS
TIPS FOR PARENTS

~~ # 1 Be Informed ~~

READ everything you can about the high school!  Information will be mailed to your home, will be posted on the district/school web site, and is included in the local newspapers.  TALK to teachers, counselors, and administrators when you have a question, suggestion or a talent, interest or experience that you can share with students or staff.  VISIT the school often.  Attend programs, events, volunteer, etc.  Most important, LISTEN to your teen.  Learn about academics, social life, opportunities and challenges.  Be ready to support the student’s need to assess needs and wants, to manage time, to handle change, and to set both long- and short-term goals.

~~ # 2 Believe In School Success~~

Convince your child that s/he can succeed in school!  We’re all likely to be motivated by success but in order to foster success:

Ø      Talk to your teen about what success is and provide clear, immediate and constructive feedback about school performance and progress.

Ø      Model skills that are needed for success – listening, asking for help, time management, problem-solving, coping with change, etc.

Ø      Share experiences of handling change as normal and positive.

~~ # 3 Support the Pathway to College*~~

What matters most to high school students as they move through high school towards their future?

Ø      Educational, career aspirations

Ø      Planning for college

Ø      Academic preparation

Ø      Parent encouragement and support

This is a challenging task but there is professional help available.  Get to know your child’s school counselor!

*  Refers to all post-secondary educational programs
