Your task for this
webquest is to work in groups of four or less to produce a "volcano
guide". This will be like an informational booklet about volcanoes.
There will be requirements that you must fulfill, but many will be
choices. Work together with your group to create a very attractive
booklet.
The tasks that you will be
expected to complete are listed below:
1. Section
One of your Booklet:
You will present the three different types of volcanoes. You will explain
how they are classified, and why they are different from each other. You
should also talk about why they are the shape that they are (hint: it has
to do with lava) and the different parts of the volcano. You will also
create a full page (8 1/2 X 11) picture of a volcano (your choice of what
type), showing the different parts with labels.
2. Section
Two of the Booklet:
You will be explaining why volcanoes occur, using the most modern theory
of Plate Tectonics. Describe what Plate Tectonics is, and how it works.
Describe how the Earth's plates move (and what happens when they run into
each other).
3. Section
Three of the Booklet:
This is a section about where volcanoes happen. Using this
source from the USGS,
give the name of the area where many of the world's volcanoes occur. Why
did this area get its name? Aside from this particular area, where do
volcanoes usually occur (this goes along with section two). Draw a full
page cross section of how a volcano is formed (not a hot spot). Speaking
of hot spots, be sure to explain what those are, and name a couple to be
safe.
4. Section
Four of the Booklet:
This section is important, since it directly relates to all of us:
Volcanic Hazards. Do some research into what hazards volcanoes can produce
for people living near one. Write about the various hazards, and
what (if anything) can be done about them. The most important part of this
section will be the preparedness tips that you give. Your research should
give you ideas on what people should know and do to prepare for volcanic
hazards. Tell the readers what they should do. Also, create/draw a
"model" emergency kit that people could have in their homes in
times of emergency (volcano, earthquake, etc.).
5. Section
Five of the Booklet:
This part is all about history. Your group should do some research into a
historical volcano of your choice, and give a summary of why it has been
remembered throughout history. Remember, history is the past, no matter
how long ago. Be sure to include pictures, if possible, and be very clear
with your details. There have been lots of famous volcanoes, just pick
one.
6. Section
Six of the Booklet:
This is the final section of your booklet. This section is for present
volcanoes. You will be picking an active volcano and describing its
location, dangers to people, size, and other characteristics. This
must be a different volcano than the one you're using for section
five. Research the history of this
volcano, like past eruptions, or how local peoples may have built it into
their culture. Include pictures of the volcano, and discuss how people in
the area have prepared themselves to deal with eruptions.
7. Section
Seven of the Booklet:
This is your bibliography.
The team must use at least three resources, one of which
must be a non-electronic source.
There are plenty of books in the library as well as textbooks.
Booklet Requirements:
- Your
booklet must have an illustrated front and back cover (front cover should have a
title and group names)
- All
pages within should be typed or very neatly written.
- All
diagrams asked for should be hand drawn and colored.
- Pictures
included can be print outs, but you must include where you got the
pictures from.
- There
will be a lot of writing involved, so grammar and spelling are very
important.
- Remember...the
more creative and informative this is, the better your score will be.

These are the
resources that should help you find the information that you need.
Each of these websites is very extensive, especially the USGS site.
Sometimes the language is hard to understand. If this is the case,
ask your teacher to help you understand the vocabulary that is
giving you trouble.
Feel free to find any other sources that are not listed below. Use
search engines, or whatever you feel necessary.
Volcano World- Cool site that is fairly kid oriented.
Alaska Volcano Observatory- Website dedicated to providing current information
about active Alaskan volcanoes.
The Electronic Volcano- This is another descriptive volcano site oriented for
students.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory- This is a site that reports activity to the Hawaiian
volcanoes. Good for current information into these famous volcanoes.
Volcano
Live- An
informational site that has data on current volcanoes.
Volcano Informational Center- This is another informational site about volcanoes.
Types
of Volcanoes
- This site will explain the types of volcanoes.
MTU Volcanic Hazards Page- This is a site that discusses hazards for people who
live within volcanic areas.
Deadly
Shadow of Vesuvius-
This is a PBS site that talks about Vesuvius, and its impacts on the
people who lived there.
