Media Center Frequently Asked Questions
Usage Questions Circulation Questions Computer Questions
o Do I need a pass before or after school?
No, you’re free to come and go during your free time.
o How about during lunch?
You don’t need a pass, but you need to show your ID. We prefer that once you enter the library, you stay until the bell rings. Please sign in on the clipboard at the entrance.
o Can I go to the library during one of my classes if the teacher says I can?
Yes, with a pass from the teacher. Please sign in on the clipboard when you arrive, and give the pass to a staff member.
o Does the library have a copier I can use?
Yes. It is on your left as you enter the room. Copies are ten cents a page. The machine does not accept bills, but we can give you change for a dollar. You can use nickels, dimes, and quarters.
o What’s the difference between fiction and nonfiction?
Fiction books are not true accounts. Nonfiction is usually true (with exceptions such as folktales and poetry). If you are working on a report, you will need nonfiction to get supporting information.
o How can I find a book on a specific topic?
Use the online catalog at any of the three computers near the entrance, or you can log into your own account and use it there. You can search for any library materials by keyword, author, title, subject, or series.
o How can I find a video or DVD on a specific topic?
Type in your keywords and the word "video" (without the quotation marks). It will bring up any DVDs or videos we have on your topic.
o How many books can I check out at a time?
You may take out three books on one topic, with a total of ten items.
o When will my books be due?
Books, magazines, CDs, and audio tapes are due in two weeks. Videos and DVDs are due the next day.
o Do I really need my ID to sign something out?
Yes, you do. It serves as your library card.
o Can I rent a video or DVD?
No, but you may borrow it for free! Please remember that videos and DVDs are due the following school day.
o What happens if I have an overdue book?
You should make an effort to return it as soon as possible. Other students may be waiting to use it.
o What happens if I lose a book?
First, make an effort to find it. Many books turn up when bedrooms are cleaned! If the book is truly lost, you will need to pay the replacement cost. You will receive a bill indicating the amount to pay. Please come to the library and take care of it. You may not borrow additional materials while you have an overdue.
o Can I borrow a book from another school in Nashua?
Yes, you
may. Go to the circulation desk to place your request. Most materials will
arrive in 2-3 days. Please be aware you are responsible for replacing the item
if it is damaged or lost. To review the Interlibrary Loan Policy, click here:

o What is the OPAC or IPAC?
These are terms we use interchangeably for the online catalog that locates library materials. OPAC stands for Online Public Access Catalog, and IPAC means Internet Public Access Catalog.
o How do I get an account?
Ask at the circulation desk. We will give you the papers you need. You must read and agree to abide by the Responsible Use Guidelines. Sign the paper and, if you are under 18, your parents need to sign it also. Bring your paper to the library, and you should have an account within a day or two.
o How do I log-in to the network?
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Type your username, which is usually your last name followed by your first initial. Type in your password and press Enter. Be sure to change your password when you first get your account to something you can remember. It must be at least 8 characters long.
o Can I use someone else’s account until I get my own?
Absolutely not. That is in violation of the Responsible Use Policy. Think of it as being like borrowing someone’s driver’s license!
o How to I get a problem with my account resolved?
Come to the library and write a note to Mrs. Billings, explaining the problem. We will get it to her for you. The problem is usually resolved quickly.
o How do I save something correctly?
Be sure to save it to your space on the server, the z drive. Use the menu “File”, then, “Save as”, to be sure your document goes to the right place. Items saved incorrectly could be lost if your account has problems. Please ask a staff member for assistance if you need it.
o What printer do I use in the library?
C-105. It should come up automatically for you if you are in the Media Center. You will find the printer off to one side of the center computer area. Please limit your printing to only necessary items for school. Consider cutting and pasting into Word to save some trees!
o How do you use the scanner?
You need to log on to the computer near the online catalog. Instructions are posted on the right side of the carrel that will take you through the process.
