Weather Glossary
Air Pressure The downward push of the air in the atmosphere.  
Atmosphere The air that surrounds the earth  
Anemometer An instrument used to measure wind speed

Beaufort Scale Scale of wind velocity raging from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane)

Barometer An instrument used to measure changes in air pressure

Celsius The official name of centigrade scale, where the boiling temperature of water is 100 degrees and the freezing temperature is 0 degrees  
Climate Weather condition of an area  
Condensation Condensing ; condensed material (esp. . water on cold windows ) abridgement  
Cirrus A giant thunder cloud that towers to gray heights usually there are thunder storms, heavy rain, hail, and lightning.  
Cumulonimbus A giant thundercloud that towers to gray heights. Usually there are thunder storms, heavy rain, hail and lightening.  
Cumulus A form of cloud consisting of rounded masses heaped on horizontal base.
Cyclone Any violent windstorm such as a hurricane or tornado.  
Evaporation To change water or liquid into vapor.

Fog A large mass of water vapor cooled to fine particles.

Fahrenheit The temperature scale on which the freezing point is 32 and the boiling point is 212 degrees.  
High Pressure Area An area of cool sinking air.  
Humidity Water in the air.  
Hurricane A large powerful storm with heavy winds and heavy rain.

Hygrometer An instrument used to measure humidity.  
Low Pressure Area An area of warm rising air.  
Meteorologist An expert in weather.  
Monsoon A strong wind that brings in downpours.  
Precipitation Water from the atmosphere that falls to the ground.  
Rain Gauge An instrument for measuring rainfall.  
Stratus Clouds Flat layer of low clouds.  Usually there is drizzle, light snow or overcast skies.  
Temperature A measure of how fast the particles in matter move.  
Thermometer An instrument for measuring temperature typically by the rise and fall of a liquid in a thin glass tube.  
Tornado A dark column of air shaped like a funnel extending down.  
Troposphere The part of the atmosphere between the Earth's surface and the stratosphere in which most weather occurs.
Typhoon Severe tropical hurricane occurring in the Pacific Ocean.  
Water Cycle The cycle of which water travels when being used over again.  
Weather The condition of the air around us.
Weather Vane Revolving pointer on church spire, etc...  
Wind Speed The speed of which the wind is moving.  
Water Vapor Water in gas form.
