Lesson Plan for Third Grade “Where in the World” Project
Objectives:
Social
Studies: To make students aware of maps, globes, GPS and other geographical
representations to be able to locate places in the world.
Language Arts: Reading, listening, viewing, note taking, and writing complete
sentences for podcast script.
Technology: Mouse skills, going to Internet Explorer,
use of Back Button, clicking on hyperlinks, learning how to do podcast, cutting
and pasting, recording using a computer, editing wave files, and publishing a
podcast.
Overview: Week One: The Globe and Week Two: Maps Week Three: What is a GPS Week Four, Five and Six: Fill out worksheet on location, practice oral presentation, and record oral presentation. Week Seven: Complete podcasts. Week Eight: Final presentation of ALL the podcasts.
Learner Outcomes:
Students will create a podcast giving clues to “Where in the World” is.

Materials: Computers, globe, videos on geography from United Streaming, SmartBoard, GPS unit, outline map of the library, "Where in the World" worksheet, handout map Atlas - Xpeditions @ nationalgeographic.com access to BrainPOP - Health, Science, Technology, Math, English Animation and Educational Site for Kids, world atlases, pencils, and paper.

Finding our way 22 minutes
GPS 4 minutes
Procedure:.
Week one:
1.) Briefly discuss the globes and ask question about the globe.
2.) Using the SmartBoard or large screen monitor, show the video.
3.) Ask students what they learned and what they found the most interesting.
Week two:
1.) Briefly discuss the maps and ask question about maps by having them look at
atlases.
2.) Using the SmartBoard or large screen monitor, show the video.
3.) Hand out outline of the library. Have students in groups of two MAKE a map
of the library.
Week three:
1.) Briefly show Mrs. Crowley’s GPS and ask students questions.
2.) Using the SmartBoard or large screen monitor, show the video.
3.) Go to BrainPop website and view movie on GPS. As a group, take the
quiz.
4.) Take GPS outside and do some readings.
Week four:
1.) Introduce podcasting by discussing it and showing where you can go to find podcasts.
2.) Introduce students to their location map and the “Where in the World” worksheet,
assign locations and explain that they
are writing clues on how to find their location.
3.) Have students go to the computers and start researching their locations.
Week five and six:
1.) Continue research as needed.
2.) Have students work on writing clues.
3.) Have students practice their ‘script’ and reading with expression.
Week seven:
1.) Have students record their ‘scripts’.
2.) Edit what is needed for final product.
3.) Publish the podcast.
Week eight:
1.) Have students present their podcast and have other students guess where it
is.
