France - Biographies and Itinerary

 
Mrs. Claudia Novak
Job: Systems Administrator/ Title 1 Teacher/Trainer, Nashua School District, Nashua, NH.  I work with teachers and students on how to use technology in the classroom.

Background: In college, I majored in History and Library Science.  I have been working with computers since 1971.  In 1976, I went to French cooking school and I love to cook.  I have been breeding Welsh ponies and Cobs since 1977. Since 1992, I have traveled with my husband to Australia, Canada, China, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. I am an avid gardener. 
Likes: Computers, gardening, horses, cooking, history, traveling and reading.
Special Interests:  I currently have three Welsh Cobs at my farm.  I love to study and design gardens. I faithfully write in my garden journal and my blog for Dawna Lisa. I love to travel and see new places. 
Overview: My first Virtual Fieldtrip was to France in 1999.  Sadly, it was before I had a webpage BUT I do have all the pictures that you can look at and some of the emails that you can read.  I am excited about traveling to France again.  I wonder what has changed in France in ten years.  What do you think will have changed?
Dr. Leslie Novak
Job:
 
Research Scientist, SSCI, Woburn, MA.  I evaluate how well radar works.

Background: I graduated from college with a major in Electrical Engineering.  I obtained my Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California/Los Angles in 1971.  I worked at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, MA for over twenty-five years and have retired.  I recently joined SSCI as an consultant.  I have been an adjunct professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA since 1973 teaching classes in higher mathematics and engineering.  Because of my job, I must travel throughout the United States and the world presenting research papers and teaching classes. My research has aided in developing navigational systems for missiles.
Special Interests:
I play the clarinet, tenor and alto saxophone.  I studied music with Lenny Tristrano, a famous blind American jazz musician.
Likes: Gardening (growing vegetables), jazz music, World War II history and writing papers on radar.
Overview: I know I will enjoy visiting France again. I am sure that both Mrs. Novak and Gretchen will keep me very busy.
Gretchen Novak

Job: Marketing and sales for a research company

Job: I work for a research company in Washington, DC. 
Background
:  I graduated from Seton Hall University with a major in Criminal Justice.  My mother has been breeding Welsh Ponies and Cobs since 1977, which I have been riding and competing with since I was 18 months old.  A number of years ago, I returned to Seton Hall to get my Masters in International Relations.  I have to travel a great deal for my job and sometimes feel like I live out of my suitcase. 
Likes
:
Horses, art, fashion, interior design, traveling, reading, and tennis.
Special Interests:
  I love riding and showing horses.  I love traveling and being introduced to new people, their land, culture, and customs.  I played the clarinet, enjoy music, and love dancing.  I like to stay in shape by exercising regularly. 
Overview:  I am grateful for the opportunity to return to France and thrilled to share the experience with my parents.  My first trip to France was with my mother in 1994 and I have been lucky enough to return a few times since then. This is the third Virtual Fieldtrip that I have joined my parents on.  I am sure it will be as much fun as Italy last year. 

Itinerary

October 8th, Thursday ~ Dr. Novak and I will be leaving Boston at 5:30 pm for a flight to Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport.
October 9th, Friday ~ Leaving CDG on a flight to Toulouse that arrives at 11:35am.  Picking up rental car and heading for Carcassonne.
October 11th, Sunday ~ Heading to Bordeaux where we will be staying until Friday, October 16th.
October 14th, Wednesday ~ Gretchen arrives.
October 16th, Friday ~ Heading to Dinard, Brittany
October 18th, Sunday - Dropping off rental car  at airport and heading to Paris.
October 21st , Wednesday - Back to Charles de Gaulle airport for a flight home at 1:40pm.
