Virtual Fieldtrip 2003 - 2004

Virtual Tour of Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of my favorite countries.  I have visited various parts of Holland on four separate trips.  The Dutch people are very friendly and most speak English.   Take a careful look at the Map of Netherlands to be able to follow where we will be going.
The Netherlands is about the only country that I can think of can be referred to by two totally different names and the name of the people does not resemble either of these names (i.e. France, the French or Germany, Germans and Hungary and Hungarians).  I guess this is one of the things that makes Holland/the Netherlands and the Dutch people very special.
The first place that we are going to be stopping in the Netherlands is Arnhem. Arnhem is the site of an important battle of World War II.  The book A Bridge Too Far by Cornelius Ryan and the movie of the same name, have immortalized this largest airborne operation in history.  The 60th anniversary of this battle will be celebrated on September 17th.  If you wish to find out more on this battle go to Remember September '44  Dr. Novak is VERY interested in visiting Arnhem.
While in Arnhem, I plan to visit with a couple of my Welsh pony and Cob friends that live nearby on Sunday.  Sunday evening, we are going to drive to Amsterdam.  To learn more about Amsterdam go to Learning Log for Amsterdam.
While in Amsterdam, we are planning to drive out to the coast and the tulip beds.  The tulip is an important part of Dutch history.  Go to Learning Log for the Story of the Tulip.
More than half of the Netherlands in below sea level.  About the 10th century, the Dutch started working on ways to keep the North Sea out of their land by using wind mills and dikes.  Go to Learning Log Dutch Water Management.
Hope you enjoy these quick Virtual Tours.  Don't forget to  go to Suggested Activities to see other things that you can do.
