Following a Trail of Turquoise

 Lesson Plan

 Objectives:
Social Studies: To make students aware of Native Americans of the Southwest.  To introduce the use of Primary Resources in the form of Native American jewelry.
Language Arts:  Reading, listening, viewing and writing answers to questions.
Science:  Awareness of the various minerals that are in turquoise and how different levels of certain minerals change the color of turquoise.
Technology:  Mouse skills, going to Internet Explorer, clicking of Favorites, use of Back Button and clicking on hyperlinks.

Overview:  Students will go to pre selected websites and answer questions (Learning Logs) on Native Americans of the Southwest.  This lesson will take two/three periods.  One for jewelry display and two for completing the Learning Logs.

Learner Outcomes:
Students will answer all questions in the Learning Logs.

Curriculum Standard 17. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the chronology and significance of the unfolding story of America including the history of their community, New Hampshire, and the United States

Earth/Space Science
4b. Curriculum Standard: Students will demonstrate an increasing ability to understand that the Earth is a complex planet with five interacting systems, which consists of the solid Earth (lithosphere), air (atmosphere), water (hydrosphere), ice (cry sphere), and life (biosphere).
Identify common rocks and minerals using their physical properties.
English Language Uses
Curriculum Standard 6. Students will demonstrate competence in using the interactive language processes of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing to communicate effectively.
Use the tools of information technology to enhance written and spoken messages

Materials:  Computers, SmartBoard, pencils and paper.

Procedure:
1.) Mrs. Novak gives a short talk on her Native American jewelry and the history of turquoise.
2.) Using the SmartBoard or large screen monitor, introduce the Following the Turquoise Trail website and in particular, Learning Logs. 
3.) Teacher can do the learning logs using the large screen monitor as a group activity. Could also be done in Computer lab time as an individual activity.

Assessment:

Completed Learning Logs.
