Objectives:
Science: Learning about simple machines.
Language Arts: Reading, listening, and viewing.
Technology: Mouse skills, navigation on the network, going to
Internet Explorer, use of Back Button, clicking on hyperlinks,
writing an entry in a blog, and responding to blog entry.
Overview:
Week One: Show computer
video on simple machines and do Brain Pop. Week Two: Show website
to be used and worksheet (track research information and help with
writing). Week Three: Finish writing and present what teams have
written. Week Four: Write questions to other bloggers and answer
questions asked of them.
Learner Outcomes:
Students will create a blog entry to explain their simple
machines. Students will ask at least one question of another
blogger about their machine (Ask the Expert model). Students will
answer at least one question.

Curriculum Standard 6. Students will demonstrate competence in

Science, Technology, and Society
2b. Curriculum Standard: Students will demonstrate an increasing
ability to use technology to observe nature.
Explore nature with simple scientific tools, e.g. magnifying
glasses, levers, pulleys, batteries and bulbs.
Materials:
Computers, videos,
worksheet, SmartBoard, clipboard,
pencils, and paper.
Procedure:.
Week One:
1.) Briefly speak about simple machines and ask students about they
perceptions of simple machines.
2.) Using the SmartBoard or large screen monitor, show the movie.
Do a Brain Pop on Simple Machines. Introduce the website that we
will be using.
Week Two:
1.) Briefly speak about Internet safety and blogging.
2.) Show students the websites that they are going to be using for
research.
3.) Have students start their research and writing using the
worksheet with six items they must have.
Week Three:
1.) Take students to Mrs. Novak's blogging website.
2.) Have students read each entry that they have written.
3.) Have students pull from a hat the name of a simple machine team
to ask a question of. Make sure that students have a clip
board with paper to write down questions that they have.
Week Four:
1.) Have teams type in their questions.
2.) Have students answer at least one question about their machine.

Alternative Lesson Plan:
Instead of doing writing piece, students will do the
Learning Log and then ask questions of
the bloggers.
