Lesson Plan for Olympic Medal Tracking Project
Objectives:
Social Studies: Learning about countries around the World.
Language Arts: Reading, listening, and viewing.
Math: Addition, graphing and using a spreadsheet (rows and
columns).
Technology: Mouse skills, going to Internet Explorer, navigation
on the network, use of Back Button, clicking on hyperlinks, learning
to use a spreadsheet (Excel), saving on the network, highlighting
text, inputting data in a spreadsheet,, and graphing in Excel.
Overview:
Week One: Introduce
lesson, show website to be used, students select country and forms
to track information daily. Week Two: Explain using Microsoft
Excel and start inputting data. Week Three: Continue inputting
data. Week Four: Finishing inputting data and do graphing of
data.
Learner Outcomes:
Students will create spread sheets and graphs using Microsoft
Excel.

to acquire, process, report, and analyze geographic information.
Locate on a map or globe the continents; major nations; smaller
political entities (for example, provinces, states, cities); and
major oceans, rivers, and mountain ranges.
English Language Uses
Curriculum Standard 6. Students will demonstrate competence in
using the interactive language processes of reading, writing,
speaking, listening, and viewing to communicate effectively.

Materials:
Computers, medal tracking
form, pencils, and paper.
Procedure:.
Week One:
1.) Briefly discuss that students are going to select a country (in
teams) and track the medals that they win in the Olympics.
2.) Using the SmartBoard, Visions or large screen monitor, introduce
the website that we will be using. Explain the tracking form.
3.) Have teams select country and prepare for tracking the medals.
Week Two:
1.) Briefly introduce students to Microsoft Excel.
2.) Have students start to input the data and save spreadsheet.
Week Three:
1.) Continue inputting of data.
Week Four:
1.) Finish inputting data.
2.) Briefly explain using the Graphing Wizard.
3.) Have students create their own graphs and collect ALL the data
from students and make one BIG worksheet for all the countries.
