Lesson Plan for All About Explorers

Objectives:
Social Studies: Learning about European exploration.
Language Arts:  Reading, listening, and viewing.
Technology:  Mouse skills, going to Internet Explorer, navigation on the network, use of Back Button, clicking on hyperlinks, learning to use Inspiration, highlighting text, inputting data into Inspiration,, and inserting graphics.

Overview:  Week One: Introduce lesson by giving the Columbian Exchange quiz, show website to be used and show one or two videos.  Week Two:  .  Week Three: Continue .  Week Four:  Show webs.   
 
 Learner Outcomes:
Students will create a web of their explorer using Inspiration.

Social Studies
Curriculum Standard 8. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the patterns and results of international trade including distribution of economic resources; imports and exports; specialization; interdependence; exchange of money; and trade policies
Explain how international trade links countries around the world and how such trade influences the economic welfare of nations

Curriculum Standard 16. Students will demonstrate the ability to employ historical analysis, interpretation, and comprehension to make reasoned judgments and to gain an understanding, perspective, and appreciation of history and its uses in contemporary situations
Examine historical data related to ideas, events, and people from a given time-frame in order to reconstruct a chronology and identify examples of cause and effect.

Curriculum Standard 17. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the chronology and significance of the unfolding story of America including the history of their community, New Hampshire, and the United States.
Discuss the reasons why various groups of people came to America; why and how they became Americans; and how they contributed to the development of our country.

 

Materials:  Computers, videos, SmartBoard, Inspiration software, All About Explorers - The Columbian Exchange worksheet, pencils, and paper.

 

Procedure:.
Week One:
1.) Hand out All About Explorers – The Columbian Exchange and have student take the quiz. 

2.) Using the SmartBoard or large screen monitor, play the movie on early explorers.
3.) Check the quiz.
4.) Play the movie of the Vikings.
5.) Reintroduce Inspiration.
Week Two:
1.) Show the Explorers movie.
2.) Have students start to do research on their assigned explorer and start to work on web. 
Week Three:
1.) Continue working on webs.
Week Four:
1.)Show and explain the webs on explorers.
