About Nashua High School North and Nashua
High School South
In the fall of 1999, Nashua made an amazing commitment to
the children of the City when the Board of Alderman approved a $143M
bond to construct a new high school and to fully renovate the
existing school. The community was growing and its high school was becoming over-crowded.
Also, the infrastructure and facilities at Nashua High School were
very dated. So, the City of Nashua embarked on a journey that would
result in two separate but equal high schools.
In
May 2000, construction began on Nashua High North. It is an 77-acre
site with a 422,000 square foot school, playing fields, and track
and field facilities. The school opened September 3, 2002 when juniors and
seniors (Grades 11 and 12) entered the school and classes were held
in the 111 traditional classrooms and other instructional spaces, Media Center, 740-seat
auditorium, 3 gymnasiums (a large gym with 2000 seats, a medium gym with 500 seats, and small gym for dance/aerobics), a weight room/fitness facility, the cafeteria which seats 525 people.
NHS North also hosts the "Board Room" with space for 100 members of the public to attend city meetings
and learn more about the workings of the Board of Education. The school has 758 parking spaces for students, visitors and faculty members.
Sophomores
currently attend school in the 'old' Nashua High building which is
now referred to as Nashua High School South. In June of 2002 a wall
was built across the center of the school and construction on the
north side of the building began. The renovated portion of the
building reopened in September of 2003 while renovations began on
the southern side of the building. Nashua High School South, when
completed, will be a 449,000 square foot facility located on a 60-acre parcel
of land off West Hollis Street. This school will also accommodate 2000 students in 112 class rooms with a Media Center, Auditorium (735 seats), three gymnasiums (a large gym with 2000 seats, a medium gym with 500 seats, and small gym for dance/aerobics), a weight room/fitness facility, and a cafeteria that can seat 500 students. The school will feature 681 parking spaces for faculty, visitors and students.
special facilities for NHS South will include a planetarium.
Through the 2003-04 school year freshman will attend classes at the
junior high schools: Elm Street, Pennichuck or Fairgrounds. They attend school in the same buildings as the 7th and 8th graders. They will move into the
high schools in September of 2004. At that time, Nashua will
have two separate, independent and comprehensive high schools with
approximately 2100 students in grades 9-12. |
