The History of Ledge Street School

Ledge Street School was built in 1957. There were only 14 classrooms and a little over 300 students. Our Gym classes were held in the Cafeteria. We didn’t have a Music or Art rooms (teachers had to come around with carts). There was NO Library, playground, kindergarten or intercoms.  There were 35 students to a class. The building’s shape was a 'T' with 2 entrances. Today it is shaped more like an 'I'.
The first addition was put on in 1965. It added six classrooms.  Our second addition was approved in 1988 and was finished in 1990. It included a Gym wing, a Library wing and a fifth & sixth grade wing.  Two portable classrooms were added.  Our school rededication was on Sunday October 21, 1990. Our gymnasium was dedicated to Conrad "Connie" Therrien on June 13th, 1991.
This is the floor plan from 1991.
We wish to thank Mrs. Janet Craig and her Fourth Grade class for compiling Ledge Street Scrapbook in 1992.  We also would like to thank Mrs. Russell, Mrs. Pratt and Mrs. St. Jacques for sharing their memories.
