Safety in the Laboratory (revised 2004)

1.      FOLLOW DIRECTIONS: Follow all instructions exactly.  DO NOT fool around in the lab.  Students who are caught fooling around will have to stop all the lab work and will receive a zero for the activity.  Fooling around includes “rough housing”.

2.      SPILLS: Report all spills to the teacher.  All spills must be cleaned up immediately.  Wash your hands when you are done.

3.      HOT PLATES:  Electric hot plates will be used to heat water for some experiments.  Hot plates remain hot for some time after they are turned off.  Unplug hot plates by holding the plug not the cord.

4.      MICROSCOPES

·        Place microscopes away from the edge of the table.         Back to Home Page

·        Carry the microscope with TWO hands.

·        Unplug by holding the plug not the cord.

·        Store on the lowest power.

·        Clean microscope before putting it away. Only use wet lens paper/tissue.

5.      GOGGLES: Goggles must be worn during all labs that use chemicals or glassware and during dissections.  DO NOT place goggles face down on any surface, this will scratch the lens. Clean goggles with Windex before putting them away.

6.      EYE DROPPERS:  Eye droppers are not to be used to squirt liquid at other people or objects.  They are used for picking up small amounts of liquids.
