Draw the process of DNA replication. Include the following and place the letter of each part next to the part in the drawing or label the part when you draw it. Use colored pencils
a) Draw a capital Y on a full sheet of paper. Make the stem of the Y a double line for the DNA molecule. The upper parts of the Y are the opened rails of the DNA
b) Label one open rail 3’ and the other 5’. Label the other end of the DNA at the stem of the Y.
c) Draw a arrow on the edge of the paper to show the overall direction of synthesis.
d) Label the leading side.
e) Draw an arrow to show the direction of DNA synthesis for the leading side
f) Label the lagging side
g) Draw an arrow to show the direction of DNA synthesis for the lagging side
h) Add a small RNA primer to the leading strand
i) The leading strand will grow in its ( 3’-5 ) ( 5’-3’ ) direction
j) Label the replication fork
k) Draw one RNA primer on the lagging strand next to the replication fork
l) Draw in 3 Okazaki fragment against the lagging strand and number them 1-3 from oldest to newest based on order of formation
m) Draw a star to show where DNA ligase would be needed
n) Indicate where a telomere would be located.
o) Draw in DNA polymerase on the leading and lagging strands.
p) Where would helicase be active ?
Give a statement of function or definition for each of the following enzymes or parts:
DNA polymerase
Okazaki fragment
RNA primer
telomere
DNA ligase
Helicase
In which direction will a strand of DNA elongate?
