Questions we had when we were new.......and answers too!!
Q: Where is the school office located?
A. The main entrance to the school is on Elm Street. This is the entrance to use during normal school hours. to get to the Office, enter through the main entrance and go up the stairs and turn left. The office will be on your immediate left.
Q: How do I have my child dismissed early?
A. Send a note in with your child. Your child should take that note to the office in the morning to obtain a dismissal note that he/she then will give to the teacher at the time of his/her dismissal. At that time your child is allowed to meet you outside the school. If you do not send in a note, you must go to the office and show a photo id in order to sign your child out.
Q: If my child is absent for several days how do I obtain his school work to be completed at home?
A: Phone the school and ask to speak with the guidance office. Someone there will obtain your child's work from all of his/her teachers and have the bundle of assignments available in the guidance office for you to pick up.
Q: How do I stay in contact with my child's teacher?
A: All teachers have an email address. The address is their last name, first letter of their first name and then @nashua.edu. So, John Smith can be reached at smithj@nashua.edu. You can also call the school and leave a message for a teacher to return your call. Each student is given an agenda book, some teachers use these as a form of communication where they may write a note to you and you can return a note in the same manner. If you trust your child to deliver a note, you can always communicate by sending a note in with your child. At open house we encourage you to ask each teacher how they prefer to communicate.

Q: How may I work with the teachers when my child seems to have difficulties in class?
A: Contact the teacher directly and ask for a meeting. work out a personal plan that works for you, the teacher and your child.
--
Q: How can I get involved in school activities?
A: Parental involvement is increasing at Elm St. We encourage you to contact the PTO or teachers directly if you have particular interests. The PTO has a page on the school website with involvement opportunities and contact information. The PTO also hold monthly evening meetings which any and all parents are welcome to attend.
--
Q: When and how can I meet all the teachers of my child?
A: In September there will be an Open House where all parents are welcome to come and meet their child's teachers. Parents are given a schedule to adhere to that allows them to move to all their child's classes in a similar manner as their child would. This gives parents the opportunity to meet all the teachers that their child has for that trimester. Open House is an opportunity to meet the teachers, but is not an opportunity to have private conversations about your child in particular.

Q: How is lunch money collected? Are there lunch envelopes like in elementary school?
A: Your child has the same cafeteria account that he/she had in elementary school. Your child can bring money in to be deposited into his/her account or pay cash on a daily basis. Payment envelopes can be obtained from the cafeteria staff.
-
Q: How do I set up a conference with my child's teachers?
A: During open house parents can sign up for conference times. Conferences are held in November, just before Thanksgiving break. If you are unable to attend Open House contact your child's homeroom teacher to sign-up for a conference time. Some teaching teams have all teachers at a conference. Other teaching teams break up teachers into two teams for conferences, so you might have a conference with a subset of your child's teachers. You may also request a conference with your child's teachers at any time.
-
Q: Who is the first point of contact or what is the procedure if an issue I have with my child or teacher does not get resolved by contacting the teacher?
A: Contact the school principal or assistant principal. They can be contacted by either calling the school office or emailing them. The principal and assistant principals are named on the school website. Emailing them is similar to emailing any staff member. Use the person's last name, then first initial and then @nashua.edu.

Q: How would I know if my child missed a homework assignments?
A: The communication and responsibility for missed homework is handled differently for each teacher and teaching team. discuss this with your child's teachers at Open House in September.
Q: Does Elm St. run on quarters or trimesters?
A: Elm St. runs on a trimester system. Therefore there are only three marking periods.
Core classes like Language Arts, Social Studies, Science and Math run for the full school year.
Classes like art, gym, General Music, Tech. ed. and FCS run for only one trimester, as well as Skills and Essential Skills.
Q: Would my child get enough time between and after classes to use the lockers?
A: Theoretically, yes. However, the lockers are quite small. also, some children have difficulty with their new lock. Many children choose to carry everything they need with them throughout the day as well as home every evening.
Q: Are students permitted a snack time?
A: No.
Q: Do students have any type of recess or outdoor time?
A: Students do not get a recess. There is no scheduled outdoor time for the students. However, during nice weather some teachers will take their classes outside for various purposes.
Notes on Athletics
Fall Sports can start the first day of school, and sometimes beforehand.
Fall Sport sign-ups occur before school starts. Sign-up sheets are available in the school office during office hours.
To participate in any school sport your child must have had a physical in the 5th grade year and a signed physical form must be turned in along with a parental permission form before a child may try-out. The physical is then good for all three years of middle school.
Other sports sign ups are also in the office and the student must get the required paperwork before the first practice.
Notes on Clubs and Activities
The best way to find out about clubs and activities is to subscribe to the schools daily bulletin emailing. This can be done on the school district website. Clubs and activities are announced to the students over the public-address system in the school, but often times students miss them. You can also go onto the Elm St. website and look at the Daily Bulletin section to see what is happening for the day.
Nurse Notes
The nurses office is located on the ground floor. Turn right once you go down the main staircase.
At an age where many children are getting braces and orthodontists recommend pain relievers it is valuable to know that you may sign a general permission slip for the nurse to give your child pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen at her discretion. Also, if your child has a braces wire that is poking them, the nurse also has tools to trim those as well.
