ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM
The ESL Program in Nashua provides English language learners with regularly scheduled support services in developing English language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension by ESL-certified teachers. These students also receive support in developing cognitive academic language, using a thematically based, and Title III appropriate approach. The ESL program uses both a pullout model and an inclusive collaborative model with a standardized ESL curriculum. All students are evaluated regularly for progress in English proficiency. Students who achieve competency or who are sufficiently fluent in English are reclassified to a monitored status for up to two years without receiving direct ESL services. In an effort to continue improving the ESL program, certain issues are currently being addressed. First, the District ensures that English language learners have equal access to the core subjects of language arts, science, math, and social studies at all levels. Second, parents are notified of their rights concerning the education and programming for their children. A third area of emphasis is to train all teachers regarding appropriate methodologies in teaching English language learners. Finally, students are assessed for English language proficiency and, if appropriate, for academic achievement on an annual basis.
