Some
of the secretary's duties on paper may include, record keeping,
generating reports, calling parents, answering the phone, ordering
school materials, and taking meeting minutes to name just a few. In
addition, to these duties are the duties not listed on paper. These
duties are the ones that really count, like comforting a sad student,
giving advice to a young girl who is scared, insisting that the
toughest, largest, male student say please and thank you, listening to
the complaints and troubles of all the students as well as your
colleagues, and monitoring and redirecting students as they wait to be
disciplined by the principal.
It
is understood that the school secretary is a pretty special and unique
position in most schools. This is especially true with our secretary Ann
Mercier. Ann is a classy lady who does her job very well, but it is not
the clerical duties or her organization skills that make her great, but
her caring relationships with the ALT students and colleagues.
Anne is the first person you see in the morning and the last person you
see before you leave. She is kind, thoughtful, as well as resilient.
Ann is not only the ears and eyes of the ALT but is the heart and soul.
