Marshmallow Siege Weapons

ALT HomeAbout ALTPatti's CornerCurriculumPartnersStaffGuidanceNurseActivitiesContacts

Rick and his students are getting it done:

Together Rick and his students are constructing Catapults and Trebuchets to launch marshmallows for distance and accuracy.  Using computers students are researching and designing various types of projectile deliverance systems from catapults to ballistas.  With designs for these early siege weapons students work together using power tools, hammer & nails, wood and other materials to build the best launch system possible.  Students’ final marshmallow siege weapon will be judged on accuracy, engineering, the farthest shooting, best looking design and most-things-gone- wrong-but-still-working.

What is truly great about this activity is that while the students are having fun they are also learning about  basic principles of physics.  Students  make predictions regarding the effectiveness of their design, they work and rework their ideas cooperatively with their partners, and finally their put their contraption to the test.  Win or loose Rick's students are learning  important skills they will need for their future, the ability to work  with others to overcome challenges and achieve a single goal.

See video of Rick's students working and testing the marshmallow launchers.
