The Read 180 program, created by Scholastic, Inc., is intended
to help students along the path to literacy success. Read 180 combines research based practices of reading
instruction with the most effective use of technology in the
classroom. The program is designed to teach the fundamental
reading skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency,
vocabulary and comprehension.

The Read 180 model consists of a 90-minute block of instruction
delivered and managed by the classroom teacher. A session
typically begins with a 20-minute period of whole group
instruction, then students rotate through three different
stations at which they spend 20 minutes each, receiving small
group instruction, working at computers on the Read 180
software, and reading or writing independently. This is followed
by a wrap-up session of whole group instruction. ALT currently
holds 60 licenses for this program which will allow our lowest
performing readers access to this literacy model. |
